Nestled deep in the Dhauladhar mountains, northeast of the well-known Shri Chamunda Devi Mandir on the Dharamshala-Palampur highway, the Aadi Himani Chamunda Temple is regarded as the original abode of Goddess Chamunda, with the valley temple below built later for easier access by devotees. This shrine is distinct from the more accessible Shri Chamunda Devi Mandir in the valley below, which was established later for easier worship. The temple sits close to the ruins of the palace of Raja Chandar Bhan Chand Katoch, a Katoch dynasty ruler who died around 1660, and is believed to be of comparable or even greater age.

Mythology & Significance

According to local legend, this is the site where Goddess Chamunda slew the demons Chanda and Munda by hurling boulders from the peak, with one such boulder reportedly still visible near the valley temple's Shiva shrine. The temple fell into disrepair over the centuries but was restored beginning in 1992, largely due to the dedication and hard work of Mr. P.D. Saini, a retired officer who devoted over 20 years to its restoration alongside a group of devotees.  Trek Routes & Distance

The Aadi Himani Chamunda Trek can be undertaken via two well-defined routes:

• Jadrangal to Aadi Himani Chamunda — A longer, more gradual route paved largely with stone steps, popular among pilgrims. This route covers approximately 13 km one way from the Dharamshala-Palampur state highway.
• Kardiana to Aadi Himani Chamunda — A shorter route of about 8.5 km one way from the last motorable road at Kand Kardiana village.
• Jia Village Route — An alternate starting point, with the trek from Jia village covering approximately 7.4 km one way.

Most trekkers complete the ascent in 6-7 hours, while the descent typically takes 2-3 hours, depending on the chosen route and individual fitness.

Trek Difficulty

The trek is rated as moderate to moderately challenging, involving a steady uphill climb through stone steps, forested trails, and open meadows. While there are no major technical obstacles or steep drops, the sheer distance and altitude gain make physical preparation important. The trail is well-marked, with shops, dhabas, solar lights, and water sources available at several points along the way, making it manageable even for novice trekkers with reasonable fitness.

What to Expect on the Trek

The trail passes through dense forests, open meadows, and stone-stepped paths, offering panoramic views of the entire Kangra Valley on one side and the towering Dhauladhar peaks on the other. Small shops and dhabas are available at multiple points along the route, and overnight stay options (dharamshalas) are available near the temple for trekkers who wish to reach before sunset and stay overnight.

Best Time to Visit

Devotees and trekkers visit the shrine throughout the year, except during the winter months when heavy snowfall makes the route inaccessible. The best time for the trek is typically between March and June, and September to November, when weather conditions are most favorable.

By Air: The nearest airport is Gaggal Airport (Kangra Airport) in Dharamshala, from where taxis or buses are available to Dharamshala or Palampur.

By Rail: The nearest major railway station is Pathankot, well connected to major cities including Delhi and Chandigarh.

By Road: Regular buses and taxis operate from Dharamshala and Palampur to the trek's starting points at Jadrangal Village or Kand Kardiana village, both located along the Dharamshala-Palampur state highway.
