Birni Mata Trek, also known as the Birni Devi Temple trek, is one of Palampur's most popular offbeat hikes, leading through dense pine and oak forests to a sacred hilltop shrine at an elevation of around 2,240 meters. Perched with a commanding view of the Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar Range, the temple and its surrounding trail offer both spiritual significance and a rewarding nature experience, with local Gaddi (herder) communities often encountered along the route.

Trek Routes & Starting Points

The trek can be approached via a few different starting points:

• Via Gallu Langha: A short 20-minute drive from Palampur brings trekkers to Gallu Langha, the most common trailhead, from where the ascent takes roughly 2 hours.
• Via Jakhni Mata Temple: Many trekkers first drive to Jakhni Mata Temple (about 5 km from Palampur) and begin the trek to Birni Mata from there, a route that takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours on foot.
• Via Lohna and Upper Bundla: Alternate access routes also lead to the temple, with the moderate trek taking anywhere from 3 to 5 hours depending on the path and pace.

Trek Distance & Difficulty

The trek covers approximately 4 km one way and is rated as a moderate hike, suitable for reasonably fit trekkers, families, and even children accompanied by adults. The trail passes through forested paths with an eatery shop available roughly halfway up. There is little to no habitation along most of the route, so carrying adequate drinking water and snacks is recommended.

What to Expect

The trail winds through dense pine and oak forests, offering serene walking paths, birdsong, and glimpses of local wildlife. As trekkers near the top, the temple reveals a 180-degree panoramic view of Palampur town, the Kangra Valley, and the Dhauladhar mountain range. By Road: Gallu Langha, the main trailhead, is about a 20-minute drive from Palampur town. Alternate starting points include Jakhni Mata Temple, Lohna, and Upper Bundla, all accessible by road from Palampur.

By Air: The nearest airport is Gaggal Airport (Kangra Airport), Dharamshala.

Tips for Trekkers
